Story shapes our perception. With conflicting accounts of her origin most predominantly positioned in blame and subordination, Eve knows all too well the implications of perspective on one’s character. What one may interpret as self-advocacy could easily be disguised as disobedience. And what another views as defiance could in tandem be an act of courage. From the beginning, Eve’s story has been filled with ambiguity. Not just because of when and how it was told, but mostly for how it was heard.
“The Mother of All Living,” Eve is ultimately responsible for the creation of all mankind, yet was also blamed for the fall of man. She is a reminder of the marginal space between our greatest capacity and our deepest vulnerability.
A true pioneer as the first woman, the first partner, the first mother, the first seeker, she did not question her worth, but rather, drew courage from it. Despite lacking guidance, she knew who she was and leaned into desire. And in turn, her eyes were opened.
Her foray with the serpent reminds us that we must trust in our own knowing, rather than look externally for answers. And in matters that involve desire, we must cautiously consult both the head and the heart. Call on Eve for the wisdom available from different perspectives, but rooted in individual truth. For she serves as a reminder that we are never truly powerless, and there is divine insight available within us all.
Eve also encourages us to embrace integrity and stand firm in our choices, regardless of the implications. When we know what we want, and make choices towards that desire, we must not silence our truth but be willing to accept any consequence that arises from it.
