• Originally formed when a living tree fell into water, and its ancient plant material was gradually replaced by minerals (usually silica) through permineralization, preserving the original wood structure in stone form. Through the process, this stone (which is actually fossilized wood) alchemically absorbed elements such as iron, copper, and manganese. When examined, petrified wood often displays detailed features like growth rings, bark texture, and wood grain patterns, but instead of organic material, it's composed of colorful minerals that can include reds, browns, yellows and even purples, depending on which minerals were present during fossilization.
